Hello! My name is HA Min Cheol, Chair of the 3rd Jeju International Marine Leisure EXPO Organizing Committee.
First of all, I would like to express my deepest gratitude to the distinguished guests and visitors from home and abroad for attending the event despite their busy schedules for the successful hosting of the expo. In particular, my special thanks go to Sandiaga Salahuddin Uno, Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy in Indonesia, for congratulating the expo and contributing to building a marine leisure network with Jeju. I also want to thank CHO Seung Hwan, Minister of Oceans and Fisheries, and Congressman Song Jae Ho for endeavoring to discover and foster the value of marine leisure content in Korea and promote it to the rest of the world. Last but not least, I would like to extend my sincere appreciation to the officials of the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries and Jeju Special Self-Governing Province for their hard work in making this event possible.
As we are seeing the end of the COVID-19 pandemic, which seemed to continue forever, with our own eyes, the marine leisure industry is faced with both a crisis and an opportunity. If the “stagnation of leisure activities” due to concerns over the spread of the virus is a crisis, “expansion of demand for marine leisure,” which mostly consists of individual activities, thanks to the wide spread of non-face-to-face culture, is indeed an opportunity. Now that direct international routes have been restored and the previously contracted leisure industry is opening up again around the world, it is imperative to make more forward-looking efforts to expand the market for marine leisure. In an effort to respond to the trend, we have arranged this expo this year in order to improve the quality of marine leisure content.
The theme of the 2022 Jeju International Marine Leisure EXPO is “Marine leisure in everyday life, from local to global!” In line with the theme, I would like to suggest transforming marine leisure into “leisure in everyday life” that can be enjoyed by all of us in our daily lives, rather than activities exclusive to a few marine leisure enthusiasts. In addition, we will develop Jeju’s marine leisure content into a world-class one by creating more concrete content using “media with stories.” To this end, we will have four sessions with exports from Korea and other nations and have discussions to seek future directions together.
We have arranged a variety of side events during which people can experience marine leisure as daily leisure that they have easy access to and may already feel familiar with. We also have an exhibition hall for people to examine and try leisure marine equipment and supplies at each booth and build a network while learning about the current conditions of the marine leisure industry. In addition, a host of programs for all visitors to easily learn and enjoy different marine leisure activities are carried out here at the convention hall and at the beaches around Jeju. I hope that all these efforts will contribute to expanding cooperation across the entire marine leisure industry and also solidify the status of marine leisure as daily leisure, further increasing the number of participants.
I would like to ask everyone to show great interest and take part in this expo, which will be held for three days starting today, and give your full support for the Jeju International Marine Leisure EXPO in its efforts in the future.
